I'm an Emeritus Professor of Physics at Simon Fraser University (SFU), a top-ranked institution located in beautiful (suburban) Vancouver, in the super, natural province of British Columbia, Canada.
My research was in theoretical subatomic particle physics, and I published fifty papers in referred journals, along with many conference papers. My specific research area dealt with the quantum field theory of the strong interactions (known by the impressive moniker Quantum Chromodynamics!), and I was a key member of an international group of theoretical physicists known as the High Precision Quantum Chromodynamics Collaboration (aka HPQCD).
I loved teaching, and devoted a huge part of my energies to public outreach. I earned my university's Excellence in Teaching Award in 1994, only two years after I was hired! I was also the recipient in 2014 of two Qilak Awards for Astronomy Communications, Public Education and Outreach, one from the Canadian Astronomical Society, and the other from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
As part of my outreach work, I led the development of SFU's Trottier Observatory and Science Courtyard, which is located in a very high-profile part of SFU's main campus. I also created the very popular public outreach program Starry Nights @ SFU, and hosted more than a hundred public star parties, with our biggest turnout at over 2000 guests for the official night-time opening of the observatory!
I've been an amateur astronomer since high school, and in 2010 I built my own roll-off roof "Cabin in the Sky Observatory" in rural British Columbia. In 2020 I decommissioned the observatory, donated the equipment to the Vancouver Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and installed fabulous new gear at the Sierra Remote Observatories.
