I live just south of the Port Kembla Steelworks. My northern sky is VERY light polluted. I have kind of enjoyed the challenge of trying to overcome this limitation.
I have been working for the University since March 2001. Prior to that I worked as a machinist in engineering workshops. I worked manual machines for the forst 15 years, and then moved onto CNC machining and programming.
My work with Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectrometers has a huge overlap with astrophotography. I have done a lot of software development and software support for our instrumentation, and this has helped me to relatively easily learn how to run my astronomy gear with computer control. Serendipitously, the reading and experimenting that I have been doing on astrophotography has allowed me to gain a much better understanding of the spectroscopy I do at work. There has been a very nice tradeoff here.
