Description

Looking around the area in Pegasus near NGC 7468 using SkySafari, I ran across NGC 7479 lying south of Markab. It looked amazing in SkySafari, so it looked like a great target, and I was not disappointed! The nucleus is quite concentrated, showing some elongation NE to SW. The southern arm seems to go very straight, then fades a bit as it takes a sudden 45-degree corner. After the corner, the arm heads straight again and contains a what looks like a narrow star cloud ( or group of star clouds). The arm then makes a sharp turn towards the NW and then forms a gentle curve that swings around a bright field star, ending near a fainter one. Heading back to the nucleus, there appears to be a small spot just north of it, perhaps a very faint field star or a galactic star cloud. The northern arm looks significantly wider than the southern arm, and has a rift that breaks off a segment of the arm along its northwest edge. The arm then starts curving quickly eastwards and fades as it makes a U-turn towards the south that makes this arm much more tightly wound than the southern one. The outer edge of the arm fans out towards the northeast as it bends around the U-turn. Heading south, the arm splits, with a rift down its center. Two concentrated spots appear in the western fork. The brighter northern spot looks likely to be a star, but the southern spot seems more fuzzy, possibly a galactic star cloud. Both branches of the arm then recombine and continue curving around the nucleus, fading away before it reaches the southern arm.
