Description

This pair of  Astrobin Debut Objects is located in the constellation of Microscopium at a declination of -30 degrees.  Both of these objects are spiral galaxies at highly inclined views to our line of sight, making interpretation of their structure difficult.   The galaxies are too far apart to be interacting.

IC 5039, at bottom right, is a magnitude 13 galaxy which is 75 million light years away.  It spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years.  The bulgeless disk is mottled with star clouds and appears to have poor definition of its spiral arms.

IC 5041, at top left, is also a magnitude 13 galaxy.  This one is further away, at 110 million light years away.  It also spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which at a further distance corresponds to a slightly larger diameter of 75,000 light years.  The barred core is yellow while the two spiral arms are blue.  The faint outer reaches of the disk extend further to the bottom than to the top.  This galaxy appears a bit disturbed.  The bright blue region to the upper left of the barred core could be a dwarf companion galaxy.
