Description

This emission nebula is most commonly called the Crescent Nebula and it resides in the constellation Cygnus about 5,000 light years away. It’s also sometimes called the Ear nebula or the Euro sign nebula due to its shape. Personally, it reminds me of the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 movie with the big brain floating around in space. It’s a large cosmic bubble about 25 light years across. Its central star is a Wolf-Rayet star, which is a hot, massive star near the end of its life that sheds its outer material and causes a great stellar wind. The structure is thought to be formed by this wind interacting with previously shed material. The blue-green “sack” enshrouding the “brain” is produced by oxygen atoms.
