Description

I had this in my cross-hairs for a good long while but being not particularly glamorous as PN I dithered more times then advisable and in the end I had to rush it to finish my PN quest. This shows in the triangular shape of the brighter stars, clear indication that the exposures were taken when the scope was still cooling down (specifically the meniscus was cooling down). This is the main Achille's heel of this telescope design and while not particularly problematic for amateur-sized instruments when scaled up in size (some time even employing a double meniscus) this leads to all sort of thermal issues, The Russian tried to make a large observatory grade Maksutov and it never became viable, alas.

Abell 50 is not particularly rewarding and being also rather faint (but brighter than most other Abell PNs) it is tricky subject. Being also small doesn't help either. Another candidate for a once-over when the time is right.
