Description

M52

Messier 52 (M52) is a bright open cluster located in the northern constellation Cassiopeia. The cluster has an apparent magnitude of 6.9 and lies at an approximate distance of 4,600 light years from Earth. It has the designation NGC 7654 in the New General Catalogue.

Also shown are NGC 7538 and my favorite NGC 7635 [Bubble nebula].

I am surprised at the background nebulosity. After further investigation the nebulosity is from poor flat acquisition. The flats somehow resulted in the noted "nebulosity".

In addition, when looking at the original data the light frames are terrible as well.

I stacked with DSS and solved astrometry in PixInsight using Gaia. I then used SPCC in this image but when I processed without darks/ flats I was unable to solve the astrometry..

This is an example of poor data. Sometimes even post-processing can't save the image!

Title: M52 processing redo: Example of Bad Data Acquisition: no flats, no darks, light frames only.

Description: The original image posted showed large areas of red that resulted from poor flat acquisition.

This image is processed without flats or darks. In PixInsight I was unable to perform astrometry with Image Analysis/ Image Solver [as the data is terrible]; hence I was unable to perform SPCC.

My conclusion is that the data is poor. I post this as an example of what poor data can look like.
