Description

This is the western part of the Veil Nebula that was formed by a supernova 21,000 years ago. Basically, it is a shock wave causing ripples and condensations of the interstellar gas and dust. The red is due to excited hydrogen while the blue is due to doubly ionized oxygen. The bright star is naked-eye 4.3 magnitude 52 Cygni. Short exposure (10sec) images were required to get it without extreme blooming. These were HDR'ed in using GIMP.

North is to the left. The FOV is about 2 x 1.25 degrees.

8-tile image mosaic details:
457mm F/4.2 Newtonian, SBig ST-8300M camera, OAG, MPCC.
9x300s 2x2 RGB Baader filters; Integration time 2.2 hrs/tile.
9x10s 2x2 RGB; Integration time 90s for the one tile with 52 Cygni.
Acquired by SGP, PHD2 guiding, PlateSolve 2; processed in PixInsight, Starnet, GIMP and ICE
