Description

This object, also known as NGC 4437, is an edge-on spiral galaxy located 30 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of +7 degrees.  It spans 10 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years.

I normally show all of my objects oriented north up.  This galaxy is south up, simply because I like to be looking down at my edge-on galaxy disks and not up at them.  Here, the core just barely peeks out above the thick dust lane.

No central bulge is seen in this galaxy and the core is offset slightly to the right.  I do not see any warping of the disk.  Some faint blue star clouds can be seen in the disk.

I like the mottled nature of the dust lane, unlike some edge-on dust lanes which look more uniformly dark.
