Description

NGC 5907 (also known as Knife Edge Galaxy or Splinter Galaxy) is a spiral galaxy located approximately 50 million light years from Earth. It has an anomalously low metallicity and few detectable giant stars, being apparently composed almost entirely of dwarf stars. It is a member of the NGC 5866 Group.

NGC 5907 has long been considered a prototypical example of a warped spiral in relative isolation. In 2006, an international team of astronomers announced the presence of an extended tidal stream surrounding the galaxy (not shown) and suggests the gravitational perturbations induced by the stream progenitor may be the cause for the warp. The galaxy was discovered in 1788 by William Herschel. Supernova 1940A was in this galaxy.

CAPTURE Information:

The image was captured with the iOptron CEM120 mount , the venerable Meade 12"LX200 SCT, and my Atik 383L+ mono CCD at F7.16 (2182mm FL). Image subs were taken through Astronomik's filters Lum, R, G and B.

All subs were done at 1x1 bin, -10C, at 10 minutes each.

IMAGE information -- 2020

Lum (600s): 39 subs (6.50hr) on May 19th, 26th and 27th.

Red (600s): 10 subs (1.67hr) on May 28th.

Green(600s): 15 subs (2.50hr) on May 29th.

Blue (600s): 17 subs (2.83hr) on May 28th.

Processing was done with PixInsight, following (for the most part) kayronjm's tutorial of Feb. 24th from several years back. Only L was used to develop the Luminance image. R, G and B were collected for the color mix.

North is up (pretty sure, or not), and this is a slight crop due to the various movement of different subs.

COMMENTS:

As with previous targets, I see I’ve imaged this one several times. Starting in 2014, then 2016 and 2019, then now. The latest is pretty good, but none them really worth writing home about.

Also, I would have added more R, G and B, but the moon is out and I do not want to wait for the next ideal night.
