Description

The Iris Nebula (also known as NGC 7023 and Caldwell 4) is a bright reflection nebula in the constellation Cepheus. The nebula, which shines at magnitude +6.8, is illuminated by a magnitude +7.4 star designated SAO 19158. It lies 1,300 light-years away and is six light-years across. I shot this nebula last year with my DSLR before I got my new cooled astro camera. I decided to just use the new data and see what I could with it vs. adding in last years data. For this image, with the very bright core, I took mostly 5 minute subs but also took a number of 1 minute subs to prevent the brightest part of the image from getting blown out during processing. I also used the CFA drizzle process in Pixinsight to get better color detail vs. regular integration (actual data vs. interpolated).
