Description

The Sunflower Galaxy (NGC 5055) contains billions of stars and is 29 million light years distant. It is about the same size as the Milky Way Galaxy.
It is named for its appearance with a bright yellow central disc and a number of short spiral arm segments dotted with starburst regions and dust lanes. The Sunflower Galaxy is a prototype for a class of galaxies known as flocculent spirals.
