Description

Everyone's first dip into astro imaging these days seems to be by sticking a cell phone up to their eyepiece, and being disappointed with the result. Often times at star parties, excited people ask to take a picture through the eyepiece, only to capture smudged, bright dots. I feel bad when people are so excited to see the picture I help them take, only to be let down by the result.

I wanted to try pushing this method to the limit if possible, and set out into the frigid cold night to get away from light pollution with a cell phone, untracked Dobsonian, and a few cheap parts to hold the phone to the eyepiece for me. It was a lot of fun, and after a few hours of playing with alignments and continuously having to push the telescope into position, I went home with a few good videos of the moon to process. Sticking to the concept, I didn't use any paid software to process the raw data. This is the result!
