Description

While M57 is a small, but bright and easily imaged target, this version was a challenge to process due to the high dynamic range of its brightness – a super bright core with a super faint surrounding hydrogen shell.  Extended Ha imaging was required to adequately bring out the outer shell (see revisions for 13 hour starless Ha image) although I had a lot of similar processing practice with my previous target, "M27 - The Dumbbell Nebula with wings" shown here:  https://astrob.in/d1njs0/0/

M57 is a well known planetary nebula located 2,750 light years away in Lyra.  Photographs taken over a period of 50 years show the rate of expansion is roughly 1 arcsecond per century which corresponds to spectroscopic observations as 20-30 km per sec.  The central white dwarf is of visual magnitude 15.75.  M57 is a bipolar nebula with a symmetrical axis at about 30 degrees as viewed from Earth.  The observed nebulosity has currently been expanding for approximately 1,600 years.   (Wikipedia)
