This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as IC 39, is a barred Magellanic spiral galaxy located 70 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of -14 degrees. This object spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 40,000 light years.

Barred Magellanic Spirals (SBm) typically have a stellar bar, a single looping spiral arm, and a large star-forming complex at one end of the bar. All of these properties are seen here. This galaxy has been labelled a starburst galaxy.

The comparison to the Hubble image in the mouseover is interesting. The Hubble image shows an orange central section which is not at all visible in my color-calibrated LRGB image. I don't understand why there is such a difference.

I also like the 2 interesting galaxies on the left side of the image.
