Description

I was fortunate that the clouds held off for an extended capture of the recent (2022-11-08) total lunar eclipse. The umbral eclipse started at about 8pm at my location, when the Moon was at an altitude of only 8 degrees, so my captures were naturally made later as the Moon rose higher.
This image is from 22:00 was captured close to the maximum totality. The red colour was amazing as you can see. It was also fortunate to see Uranus in the same FOV. It is the brighter object at upper right. I composed this shot to show the Moon diagonally opposite the Ice Giant.
This imge was produced on my C14 EdgeHD with a DSLR, the Canon EOS 5D mk II at the Schmidt focus using the Hyperstar. This combination gave me the huge FOV necessary to capture the moon and Uranus with a very respectable image scale of 1.95 arc secs per pixel. The large aperture of the C14 made for short exposure times. I tried two approaches. Firstly, I videoed the Moon using EOSmovrec with 1/30th sec exposure times, at ISO 3200, creating a 2200 frame video over ~ 1.5mins, and then processed this with the standard lucky imaging process, stacking ~ 50% of the images. EOSmovrec just captures the raw data which is useful. I also used BackyardEOS to capture a series of stills (10), with ISO 1600 and a 1/10th sec exposure time. These were stacked and processed in the normal way. The latter method produced much better results. I have generally found this to be the case with the Moon.
The mouse over (Version B) shows a wider field of view.
