Description

This object is a beautiful barred spiral galaxy located 50 million light years away in the constellation of Pegasus at a declination of +26 degrees. The galaxy spans 4.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 65,000 light years. The galaxy looks face-on but is actually inclined 45 degrees to our line of sight.

The galaxy bar is very bright and uniform along its length. Looking closely, there appears to be a faint brown dust lane perpendicular to the bar, at the center of the galaxy. There are some faint pink Ha regions around the center as well. Short galaxy arms connect to the bar and degenerate into small fragments around the disk. Many star clusters are visible throughout the disk.

The orange star to the right of the galaxy is the 10th magnitude star BD+25 4991. Some believe that the faint blue irregular galaxy to the right of this star is a dwarf galaxy which is interacting with the main galaxy, but this has not been confirmed. Many tiny detailed galaxies are visible in the background of the image.
