Description

This image of M81, "Bode's Galaxy" was shot over two consecutive nights. You may notice that the diffraction spikes are "split" a bit. Let me explain...

I am using a 90mm refractor, which will normally be free of diffraction spikes. So, when I want to have them in an image I place a crosshair over the end of the OTA. I 3D printed this so that it fits snugly over the OTA with a fine crosshair over the opening.

The problem that produced the split spikes is due to my not placing my crosshair in the exact same position on both nights. It was rotated ever so slightly.

Yes, I could just use software to add the spikes in post-processing, but I really enjoy the effect that I get using my crosshair.
