This is an image of NGC 2736, also known as the Pencil Nebula or Herschel’s Ray. That is actually the brightest piece of the massive Vela SNR and marks its eastern extremity. The overall SNR spans about 8 degrees and is relatively close at only 800 light years away. It is thought to be the result of a Type II supernova approximately 12,000 years ago. The straight edge of NGC 2736 is unusual compared to the many tangled parts of the SNR complex. I also like the tendrils of oxygen nebulosity toward the bottom of the frame.

Due to intermittent high cloud then humidity/dew challenges, I only ended with 1.5 hours of useable data. To do the target justice I really need more integration time, especially for Ha which is noticeably weaker and noisier than the OIII. But patience is not a virtue I possess in abundance, so decided to take a bash at processing anyway!

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
