The largest
star near
the centre is P Cygni (34 Cygni) also known as
the ' Revenant of
the Swan' is a Hyper Giant Blue Variable
Star in
the Constellation Cygnus
the Swan. This is located between 5000 and 6000 light away and brightened suddenly to 3rd magnitude in 1600 AD. Since 1715,
thestar has been of 5th magnitude. P Cygni is extraordinary in many ways! It has a mass 37 times and radius 76 times that of our Sun. It is 610,000 times more luminous than
the Sun and this is
the reason it can be seen from such a great distance. It is one of
the most luminous
stars known in
the Milky Way.
The Crescent Nebula is an emission nebula in
the constellation Cygnus, about 5000 light-years away from Earth and stretches about 25 lightyears across. It is
the result of a type of
star known as a Wolf-Rayet, which are massive stellar objects that are ageing and losing mass at an incredibly high rate.That's certainly
the case with this Wolf Rayet:
thestar is shedding its outer layers into space at a rate equivalent to
the mass of
the Sun about every 10,000 years.
TheStar at
the centre of
the image is Sadr it is 150 times larger than our Sun's radius. Ra
ther surprisingly
Sadr is much closer to us than
the nebula at approximately 1,800 light years distant, while
the nebula is 4,900 light years away.
