Description

This image of M81, M82, and surrounding galaxies was captured in my back garden in southern England over three nights just before Easter, during a ~90% moon. This is my first attempt at shooting HaLRGB and I really wasn’t sure how good it would be; I spent a long time in pix trying to make it look the best I could and I’m really happy with how it’s come out in the end.

Processing

Initial processing

Registered, calibrated and stacked in WBPP
Dynamic Crop and DBE on all subs

LRGB

Created an RBG image using pixelmath, then performed Photometric Colour Calibration, DeepSNR, BlurX, and StarX, making sure to keep the stars
Created an RLB image using pixelmath, then DeepSNR, and extract green to use as L (this is basically how you can run DeepSNR on a monochrome image)
Performed BlurX and StarX on L
Understretched RGB and L to roughly the same area using Histogram transformation, then combined with LGRB combo process
Masked galaxies with RangeSelection and stretched the background to bring out IFN
Curves and saturation adjustments of both background and galaxies

Ha

Created HRR image in pixelmath and neutralise background
Colour calibrated so everything other than Ha signal is neutral
Continuum subtraction using $T[0] [i] [/i]($T[1] med( $T[1])) in pixelmath
Stretch and adjust curves so bright Ha and stars are visible, and background is clipped
Clonestamp out stars, leaving only galaxy Ha images
Apply to LRGB using pixelmath

Stars

Took the extracted RBG stars and stretched with Ht and Curves
Increase saturation
Combined with HaRGB using pixelmath

Final Changes

Did some final minor stretches, curves, and sat adjustments on HaLRGB image
Added signiture in GIMP

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection.
