Description

Another backyard acquisition -- the Wizard Nebula!
NGC 7380 actually refers to the cluster of stars, with the emission nebula itself falling into the Sharpless catalog as Sh2-142. It's very hard to observe the nebula visually, but it can be done under dark skies with an oxygen filter. The nebula and stars are 8,500 lightyears away in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way, lying in the constellation Cepheus. The star cluster was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1787.

This is my third attempt at imaging it, but my first successful one, thanks to the duo-narrowband filter the Optolong L-eXtreme. It isolates hydrogen and oxygen gas light emissions to cut through the light pollution. I've been hoping to capture this guy for a few years now, and I finally got it!
