Description

This Messier object is an edge-on spiral galaxy located 30 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of -12 degrees.  It is a magnitude 8 galaxy which spans 7 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years. The galaxy disk is tipped about 6 degrees to our line of sight.

Nicknamed the Sombrero Galaxy, this galaxy is the 16th brightest galaxy in the sky.  It is visually striking because of the contrast between the thick dark dust ring and the bright central bulge.

Compared to most edge-on spirals, the galaxy disk here is surprisingly symmetric.  It does not appear very warped and the core is well centered.

The Hubble image of the mouseover is an unusually large mosaic of 6 Hubble images stitched together to span the wide (for Hubble) view.
