Description

Recently, I tried imaging the moon through various filters to see which resolved the finest detail (becoming normal atmospheric seeing). Narrowband appeared to enhance the fine detail and I think this image taken through a 7nm Ha filter supports this.

At day 7, first quarter, the moon is a beautiful sight in a twilight sky, and for astroimagers, the knowledge that it will be setting in time to take a few deep sky snapshots. This North up image shows off some nice detail along the terminator and the mountain ranges which dominate the highlands. At the top the Alps (with a tiny Valois Altus) give way to the Caucasus and then the Appenines, made famous by the Apollo 15 crew landing in the Mons Hadley delta - see Noël Donnard’s superb image of this region. Heading South, we pass by the triple crater system of Ptolemy, Alphonsus and Arzachel. Tycho is just in the shadows, and Clavius on the terminator in the south.

Captured in Envisage using 0.313s exposures and a 70% quality filter, images were automatically stacked with a medium edge filter applied after 10 images. The final image is a mosaic of two frames, stitched in Microsoft ICE and further sharpened and brightened in Startools.  The mouseover shows the inverted image, which does serve to enhance these grand craters and mountains.

Description: In my opinion, a much improved image. These are the raw data out of the DSI III pro with 7nm Ha filter, stacked and aligned in Meade Envisage with 0.313s exposures x 50 with 70% quality filter. The image is a mosaic of two stacks stitched in Microsoft ICE. No further processing has been undertaken.
