Description

UGC 12039 (PGC 68880) is a 14th magnitude type SBb spiral galaxy in the constellation Pegasus.  Measuring only 1.6’ x 0.9’, this barred spiral is not an obvious imaging target for a 100 mm refractor, yet here it is!  It appeared in the corner of the frame in one of my recent galaxy imaging projects next door in the constellation Lacerta, with just enough sensor area around it to produce a second image from the data.

UGC 12039 is framed by a triangle of fainter companions.  To the upper left in this image is LEDA 214833 (PGC 214833, mag. 16.2), which could potentially be an interacting galaxy pair.  I could not find any additional information about it.  To the right is an edge-on galaxy with the designation LEDA 2800848 (PGC 2800848, mag. 15.4), and to the lower left is LEDA 214834 (PGC 214834, mag. 17.5).

At the left edge of the image is a trio of galaxies that are faint enough that they do not even appear in TheSkyX.  The comparatively bright on has the designation 2MASX J22262353+3545518.  Near the lower right edge of the image is a faint, blue-tinted spiral that does not even seem to have a designation in SIMBAD.  Near the top center of the frame is the galaxy 2MASX J22255901+3529148.

This image is an LRGB composite with just over 14 hours of integration.  Acquisition details for this image are the same as the NGC 7265 image that is posted two slots earlier in my gallery.  This image was drizzled 2x to achieve a scale of 0.7" per pixel.
