Description

The IC 1396 is a region of ionized gas, containing the more famous Elephant`s Trunk nebula and lies in a distance of 2400 lightyears away from earth.
Sorry friends, no elephant, only the trunk.
A bright red star shows up in the image,(Mu) μ Cephei aka. Herschel’s Garnet star is one of the largest known stars, a red supergiant, which placed in the position of our Sun, would reach past Jupiters orbit.
Garnet is a red(ish) group of minerals which have been used for thousand of years as gem stone and grinding/polishing material.
