Description

As so often seems the case, I only have opportunity to try out my relatively new f12 Cassegrain when the moon is very up - so I decided to do another crazy thing and image the famous whirlpool galaxy with it at 96% illumination. I recently damaged my IDAS D2 filter and so ended up imaging without it, and I may not replace it, because having read some articles, I am not really convinced about their effectiveness, especially with white LED light. As one can imagine, this was a bit of a  struggle, and one of the things I do not know how to sort out, is the fact that I cannot get the image as sharp as other images from other scopes. Is it because I am running at f12, is it something to do with the bright light from the moon as well? I do not know. Either way, I am pleased to have got what I did. At 3 minutes exposure time per sub, this calculates to an imaging time of 5 hours. Since imaging this, the UK has had several heavy storms and recorded its strongest wind ever at 122mph, which was about 40 miles from here! Have a good night everyone...
