Description

SH2-142, the Wizard Nebula, is about 8,500 light years from Earth in the constellation of Cepheus. It was discovered in 1787 by Caroline Herschel, younger sister of William. This image has been created using H-alpha, OIII and SII filters combined using the dynamic narrowband combination technique (https://thecoldestnights.com/2020/06/pixinsight-dynamic-narrowband-combinations-with-pixelmath/). I have also used Russell Croman's AI tools including the new Blur Xterminator tool. The Nebula exists within a relatively dense star field which I have tried to "de-emphasise" a bit so the beauty of the nebula can better be appreciated. The stars are synthetic RGB derived from a composite image with H-alpha in the red, OIII in the blue and a 20/80 H-alpha/OIII blend in the green - this image was then colour calibrated using SPCC in PixInsight, stretched gently (to keep the stars "de-emphasised") in GHS, and added to the narrowband image using simple screen blending (with smaller stars I deemed more complicated add back algorithms to be unnecessary).
