Description

Bode's Galaxy (M81 / NGC 3031) and Companions (M82 & NGC 3077) Type:
  • M81: Spiral galaxy
  • M82: Starburst galaxy (irregular)
  • NGC 3077: Irregular galaxy

Distance:
  • Approximately 12 million light years from Earth for all three galaxies

Size:
  • M81: Roughly 90,000 light years in diameter
  • M82: About 37,000 light years in length
  • NGC 3077: Approximately 30,000 light years in diameter

Apparent size:
  • M81: 26.9 x 14.1 arc minutes
  • M82: 11.2 x 4.3 arc minutes
  • NGC 3077: Approximately 5.4 x 4.5 arc minutes

Apparent magnitude:
  • M81: 6.9
  • M82: 8.4
  • NGC 3077: 10.6

Constellation: Ursa MajorM81, commonly known as Bode's Galaxy, is a grand design spiral galaxy located in the constellation Ursa Major. Close by is M82, the Cigar Galaxy. The gravitational interaction between these galaxies have led to the distinctive shapes. For example, M82's starburst activity and its interesting outflows of ionized hydrogen result from its interaction with M81.This event results in an extremely high rate of star formation, and M82 shines brightly in infrared wavelengths. NGC 3077 is another galaxy in the vicinity and is also thought to be interacting with the other two, although it's less dramatic in appearance.Details accurate to the best of my knowledge from research done in 2022.
