Description

It's amazing how much detail continues to be revealed as the exposure time climbs. While I was initially trying to capture the wall of hydrogen and sulfur in the lower left, now I think the dark dust clouds are really the most interesting part of the shot. It seems this broader area which includes the North America nebula (SH2-117) is really more like the Trifid nebula, with a dark cloud of dust obscuring a pool of oxygen within a ring of hydrogen and sulfur.

This was shot over 2 weeks where clouds kept appearing around midnight, which slowed my data collection for this and other projects to a crawl. The post-processing mostly followed my usual approach of weighted FWHM stacking. SHO palette with RGB stars. I spent much more time doing star removing solely in photoshop, as I've gotten tired of the StarNet++ artifacts. The content aware fill seem to produce better results, but only if you can get a good star mask. Final tuning with the camera raw filter.
