Revision title: Have a big heart

Dicentra spp are amazing plants adorned with perfect heart shaped flowers. IC 1805 is ‘spectabilis’ if it weren’t oddly misshapen. A bleeding heart is also sometimes used to describe those who empathise with others’ suffering yet do nothing about it.

With half the world on fire, whether through climate, or man-made disasters, we cannot just standby and watch, or worse ignore. This iconic nebula reminds me that there is beauty as well as great suffering in the world, and that I must do my bit to help alleviate this, in some small way.

Aside from my musings, I combined data over two nights taken through my new Baader UHC L booster filter and an old SLR lens to produce this image. IC1805 is the bright cluster at the centre of the nebula, which together with the beautifully structured molecular dust and gas pillars makes up Melotte 15. Lying 7,500 LY away this is a spectacular object and features regularly on Astrobin. Just over 5 hours data reveals a wealth of features, even though finding focus with these old lenses is 'hit and miss'. Stacked in ASTAP the best 60% frames were processed in SIRIL, using STARNET removal and ASTROSHARP, with final recomposition and resynthesis of wonky stars. Rev E shows the starless version (mouseover), Rev F using a basic colour calibration and background extraction to emphasise the contrasting OIII and Ha; and Rev G an annotated version.
