Unter der Bezeichnung NGC 7023 verstehen wir heute einen sehr losen, offenen Sternhaufen, der in eine Staub- und Gaswolke eingebettet ist. Der helle, blaue Nebel, der auf dem Bild zu sehen ist, wird von dem heißen Stern HD200775 (SAO 19158) zum Leuchten angeregt. Dieser Reflexionsnebel ist ebenfalls Teil des gesamten Objekts und wird auch Irisnebel (engl. iris nebula) genannt, da tiefe Aufnahmen des Nebels den Eindruck einer Blume erwecken.[/left][left]Für den blauen Nebel werden in etwa 6 Lichtjahre als Durchmesser angegeben, wobei möglicherweise aufgrund der schwachen Staub und Nebelfilamente die wahren Ausmaße nur schwer abgeschätzt werden können. Die Entfernung zur Erde für die “kosmische Blume” mitsamt dem Sternhaufen beträgt rund 1300 Lichtjahre. Dennoch erscheint uns der helle Reflexionsnebel als verhältnismäßig hell. Der Grund dafür ist der äußerst helle Zentralstern SAO19158 mit der 10-fachen Masse unserer Sonne. Der Stern wird der Spektralgruppe B5 zugeordnet. Last night the time had come and I was able to set up the large equipment. I decided on NGC 7023.
Today we understand the designation NGC 7023 as a very loose, open star cluster that is embedded in a cloud of dust and gas. The bright, blue nebula that can be seen in the picture is excited to glow by the hot star HD200775 (SAO 19158). This reflection nebula is also part of the entire object and is also called iris nebula, since deep shots of the nebula give the impression of a flower.
The diameter of the blue nebula is given as about 6 light years, although it may be difficult to estimate the true dimensions due to the weak dust and nebula filaments. The distance to earth for the “cosmic flower” including the star cluster is around 1300 light years. Nevertheless, the bright reflection nebula appears to us to be relatively bright. The reason for this is the extremely bright central star SAO19158 with 10 times the mass of our sun. The star is assigned to the spectral group B5. This makes it one of the most luminous stars of all.
