Description

IC 2944 is an open star cluster associated with an emission nebula, located about 6,500 LY from Earth and spanning about 100 LY across. More commonly known as the Running Chicken Nebula - apparently the star cluster looks like a running chicken - it can be found at one end of the constellation Centaurus (the prominent star in the centre is Lambda Centauri) in a very busy part of the Milky Way. The cluster of stars at bottom left is the Pearl Cluster, NGC 3766.
