Description

Messier 106 is a barred galaxy that is approximately 24 million light years distant in the constellation of Canes Venatici.

This is a widefield image showing Messier 106 and a number of 'nearby' galaxies. These include: NGC 4217 (lower left corner; ~60 Mly); NGC 4220 (right edge, below centre; ~60 Mly); NGC 4248 (just below M106; ~24 Mly; and the physical pair NGC 4231 and 4232 (just below NGC 4248 - more than 300 Mly). The pair of stars near NGC 4217 remind me somewhat of Albireo - these stars are catalogued as TYC3455-739-1 (orange) and TYC3455-592-1 (blue).

I cropped the image square around what I considered to be the main areas of interest. We also have some higher resolution (0.75") data of M106 shot through our TEC 140 plus QSI 690 rig. Some of this data was used to give a little more detail to the main galaxy.

Data for this image were collected between 4 and 23 February 2020 from a rig in Spain that is privately owned and operated by Barry Wilson and me.
