Description

M 94 is a spiral galaxy 16 million light-years away. A bright ring has formed around its center due to intense star formation. The newly formed stars are estimated to be about 10 million years old. This ring of star formation is likely caused by a shock wave that travels outward from the center and compresses gas and dust in the outer regions. The gas then collapses into denser clouds until gravity pulls the gas and dust together and compresses it enough to make the temperature and pressure high enough for nuclear fusion to form a star. The weaker outer ring is formed by two spiral arms that extend far into intergalactic space. Also noteworthy about M 94 is the apparent lack of dark matter compared to other galaxies. The reason for this is still unknown and is the subject of further research.
