Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of grand design spiral galaxies located in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of 0 degrees.

NGC 799 is a barred face-on galaxy located 280 million light years away.  The central region is yellow and some blue star clouds are visible in the disk.  The core is a bit off-center, slight skewed to the left.  The disk spans 1.8 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a large diameter of 150,000 light years.

NGC 800 is located slightly closer, at 270 million light years away.  Our view of the disk appears to be about 40 degrees from face-on.  The disk provides an interesting contrast to NGC 799, with brighter and more distinct arms, more colorful HII regions, and more pronounced VV rows. The disk is also much smaller at a diameter of 70,000 light years, about half that of NGC 799.

These 2 galaxies are likely too far apart to be interacting with each other.
