Description

It's early summer and the irises are in bloom. They can survive about anywhere...even in space. Here is the Iris Nebula NGC7023.

(hey, that's the best lead I could come up with)

This nebula is in the northern sky during summer. It doesn't glow from its own energy and consists of mostly ash and dust. But it does happen to reflect the light from a really bright star nearby, SAO 19158.

The Iris is 1300 light years a way from us, in our own Milky Way galaxy. This is fairly close, which helps us to see it in detail since the lighted portion is smaller than many nebulas, at only 6 light years across.

The stuff closest to the star winds around and looks like smoke from an errant bottle rocket. While imagining a bottle rocket is a bit fanciful, what we see is indeed basically smoke. Who knows why it has this shape? The material is mostly inert and is likely junk from previous old supernovas. The thicker patches are almost black from blocking out the light behind.

This closeup shows the "bloom" portion. The whole nebula is quite a bit larger and is mostly tan and brown colored, as seen here around the edges of the picture.

To me it looks like a beaconing bright light. "Cross over, children, all are welcome!"

Resist. Must. Not. Walk. Toward. It.

The perfect celestial subject for listening to the Tord Gustavsen Jazz Trio performing The Other Side.
