Description

Imaged on nights of 2021/3/3, 2021/3/5, 2021/3/6

Abell 23 (PK249.3-5.4) is an almost never imaged planetary nebula in Puppis. This is only the third image on Astrobin. Abell23 is a small Abell, measuring 0.9 arc minutes and has a magnitude listed at 13.1. There is only the slightest hint of it on the RGB image. The Oiii signal is much stronger than the Ha signal. However, the Ha emission shows as a strong outer ring surrounding the Oiii, perfectly circular. A lovely and striking combination.

This Abell was a particular challenge for me because it transits at 19 degrees at my observatory in Taos, NM. This required 3 nights of imaging and many poor subs discarded. Well worth the effort though. It has some interesting detail.

My Abell Collection is here:

Abell Planetary Nebulae

Currently 60+, and soon to be complete.

This is everything I could find on the web about this PN. Very obscure.
