Description

Do you think it looks like a seagull? While it is commonly referred to as the Seagull Nebula (IC2177), to me, it looks more like a soaring eagle in the nights sky… or a space phoenix! At 3800 light years from earth and 200 light years wide, this dramatic deep sky object can be found near Canis Major. It’s full of dark dust clouds, extensive emission nebula and glowing detail at the head of the “phoenix” due to an extremely hot young star. These images were taken in January 2022 from two different locations in Sydney, Australia. O3 (15 x 600s) and Ha (19 x 600s) in Illford (bortle 2) and S2 (19 x 600s)in Freshwater (bortle 5). All up, about ~9 hours of photography. Details for the nerds:Scope: Esprit 100 (I love this scope so much)Mount: 10Micron GM1000 (unguided)Camera: ZWO ASI2600MMFilters: Antlia 3nm 36mm proFocuser: Primalucelab esatto 3”Computer: PLL EagleProcessing: Pixinsight and Adobe PS
