Description

The Heart Nebula (IC 1805) is an emission nebula located at an approximate distance of 7,500 light-years from Earth, in the constellation Cassiopeia. It is well known for its intensely glowing gas and dark dust lanes forming a shape that resembles a heart symbol. In the center of the Heart Nebula are young stars from the open star cluster Melotte 15 that are eroding away several dust pillars with their energetic light and winds.

The brightest section, a fish-shaped knot at the cusp of the heart, was discovered before the rest of the Heart Nebula and is separately classified as NGC 896, or the Fishhead Nebula.
