Description

NGC 40 (the Bow-Tie Nebula or Scarab Nebula) is a planetary nebula composed of hot gas around a dying star.  The star has ejected its outer layer and left behind a small hot star with a temperature on the surface of about 50,000 degrees Celsius.  It is about 1 light-year across and 4000 light-years from earth.
