Description

Originally discovered in 1826 by  the Scottish astronomer James Dunlop whilst working from an observatory in western Sydney, Australia, C86 presents only a modest appearance. Located at a distance of about 53,000 light years from the sun and having a mass about 340,000 times that of the sun, the cluster has a magnitude of 8.6 and subtends an angle of about 13'.

C86 lies in a relatively sparse part of the sky and the surrounding starfield includes some attractive star chains.
