Bortle 6The Pinwheel Galaxy, also known as Messier 101 or M101, is a spiral galaxy located in the constellation Ursa Major, about 21 million light-years away from Earth. It is one of the largest and brightest spiral galaxies in the sky, with a diameter of approximately 170,000 light-years.The Pinwheel Galaxy gets its name from its spiral arms, which have a distinctive pinwheel-like appearance when viewed from Earth. The galaxy is classified as a Sc spiral galaxy, which means that it has a relatively small central bulge and prominent spiral arms that are full of gas and dust. It is also known to have a high rate of star formation, with many young, hot stars located in its spiral arms. The Pinwheel Galaxy is one of the most studied galaxies in the sky and has been observed at many different wavelengths of light, from radio waves to X-rays. It is also notable for its proximity to the famous Whirlpool Galaxy, which is located about 25 million light-years away in the same region of the sky.
