Description

This image shows a trio of galaxies located in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +13 degrees. This trio is at different distances and the galaxies do not appear to be interacting with each other.

The brightest galaxy is M105, a magnitude 9.8 elliptical (E1) galaxy that is 37 million light years away .  The central bright portion of this galaxy is only 30,000 light years in diameter, although its faint outer sections extend out for about twice that distance.

The top galaxy is NGC 3384, a lenticular galaxy located 31 million light years away.   This galaxy is 40,000 light years in diameter.

The most interesting galaxy of the trio is the spiral galaxy NGC 3389.  This galaxy is the furthest away at 70 million years, and also the largest galaxy in actual size at 50,000 light years diameter.   Dust lanes and blue star clouds are seen in the outer disk region.  It looks to me like the galaxy is barred but it is not classified that way.
