Description

NGC 891 and a bunch of smaller galaxies from Bortle 1 skies at Kodachrome State Park in south-central Utah. This is in the constellation Andromeda. Here is some information about NGC 891:
  1. Classified as an edge-on unbarred spiral galaxy. Its edge-on orientation gives astronomers a unique perspective to study its structure and properties.
  2. Estimated diameter of about 100,000 light-years. It is located at a distance of approximately 30 million light-years from Earth.
  3. The dark lane is made up of dense interstellar dust, which blocks and scatters the light from stars behind it. The dust lane is a defining feature of this galaxy's appearance.
  4. Active Galactic Nucleus: NGC 891 has an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at its core. The AGN is fueled by a supermassive black hole, which accretes matter from its surroundings, emitting significant amounts of energy across the electromagnetic spectrum.
  5. Spiral Arms: Despite its edge-on orientation, NGC 891 displays faint, intricate spiral arms that extend from its central region. These arms consist of young, hot stars and regions of active star formation.
  6. NGC 891 is often compared to the Milky Way galaxy due to their similar size, structure, and characteristics.
