My second attempt at capturing this majestic galaxy. The first failed as a result of very poor flats. Dodging the clouds, and a rain shower, I managed to get just about enough data to post this image.

M31 is a firm favourite with all astronomers and astrophotographers. Visible to the naked eye, this grand spiral lies 2.4 mLY away, spans 260,000 light years and contains a trillion stars. it is accompanied by two companion dwarf galaxies M32 and M110.

This wider field was taken with a Pentax SLR zoom lens ~160mm focal length at f5.6 attached to my Altair 183 OSC. You can see the spikes from stopping down the iris around the brighter stars, but this gives a much sharper image.

just under 2.5 hours data captured the disk, brighter star clouds and contrasting dust lanes (as in the original), but subsequent 2x2 binning pushes up the SNR showing some of the fainter glow surrounding the disk (final revision). At a resolution of 5 “/Px I’m pretty happy with the result.

Captured using Stellarmate EKOS, with manual focusing, and autoguided with PHD2, I calibrated the data in ASTAP, processed in Siril using StarNet to remove the stars, and Astrosharp to pull out some of the detail. I tried to keep the colour natural, but there is not much saturation with such a short integration.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status.
