Description

NGC6302 is a beautiful bipolar planetary nebula in Scorpius. I hate the common term for it so won't use it here. However, the two lobes are thought to have resulted due to a dense disk of gas and dust surrounding the equatorial region of the star which caused ejected material to be funneled in two opposite directions. The central white dwarf is not visible but is thought to have a mass of about .64 solar masses and is considered one of the hottest known.

I have shown a cropped version of the PN to highlight the complex inner structure of the lobes. The image is shown in RGBHOO.
