Description

This object is a pair of galaxies located 80 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +54 degrees. It was classified by Dr. Arp into the odd category of Galaxies with Material Ejected From Nuclei.

The main galaxy is NGC 3448, an almost edge-on spiral galaxy. The bright portion of this magnitude 12 galaxy measures 2.7 arc-minutes long, which corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years. I love the “integral sign” dust band in front of the bright galaxy center.

The faint galaxy to the lower right is UGC 6016. This magnitude 17 galaxy is about 50,000 light years in diameter.

The big question here is whether these two galaxies are interacting. I believe they are, given the faint star “clumps” which are seen trying to bridge them.

At the top of the image is an interesting galaxy cluster located 2.2 billion light years away.
