Description

Already shot this planetary nebula using an 80mm refractor, but it seemed the perfect target to test my new Celestron OAG in combination with the Edge HD 9.25. Lots of stars in the vicinity and since I don't have the reducer, not too big so it would fall of my small sensor (ASI ZWO 183 MC). I was pleasantly surprised to see that guiding went OK (although getting round stars at 2350mm of FL is pretty challenging!), showing lots of detail already after only 2h of data. Overall happy with the OAG's first light.

The Dumbbell Nebula (M27, NGC 6853) is a planetary nebula located in the constellation of Vulpecula, at a distance of about 1300 light-years from Earth. It was the first planetary nebula to be discovered. Charles Messier included it as M27 in his catalogue of deep sky objects in 1764.

Planetary nebulae are the remains of stars similar to our Sun. When they reach the end of their life cycle as evolved red giants, they expel their outer gaseous layers to form the nebula, which is then heated by the hot core of the central white dwarf. This will be the fate of our Sun in roughly five billion years. The central white dwarf in M27 is really just the core left from the original star, and it is extremely hot.
