Description

The Jewel of the southern sky, the Great Carina Nebula (NGC3372)

Located in the Carina-Sagittarius arm of the milky way *only 8500 LY from earth, This massive complex of bright an dark nebulosity (four times larger than the Orion Nebula) is also an intense region of star formation with multiple star clusters. Carina’s pink glow comes from hydrogen that’s been energized by radiation from young, giant stars, and the dark regions are cold lanes of dust.
.
.
The Carina Nebula is home to one of the largest and most luminous stars known: Eta Carinae. Estimated at 100-150 solar masses,  if placed in our solar system it would reach and surpass the orbit of Jupiter. Eta Carina is so large that it survived a perceived supernova explosion that was observed in 1842 (making it the second brightest star in the night sky). Eta Carinae has strong stellar wind outflows that shape and sculpt the nebula.
